U Mobile and Celcom Timur Sabah formalise fibre leasing partnership to support 5G rollout in Sabah and WP Labuan.

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 April 2025 – Celcom Timur Sabah (CTS) has been appointed by U Mobile, Malaysia’s Next Generation 5G network provider, as its fibre leasing partner for the rollout of U Mobile’s upcoming 5G network in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan. This strategic collaboration marks a significant milestone in strengthening digital connectivity and accelerating 5G infrastructure development in the region.

As part of the partnership, CT Sabah will leverage its extensive fibre optic infrastructure to support U Mobile’s 5G deployment by upgrading existing 4G leased circuit sites to 5G and developing new leased circuit sites. With a fibre network spanning over 10,000 kilometres across Sabah and WP Labuan, CT Sabah is well positioned to deliver robust, reliable, and high-capacity connectivity to support both consumer and enterprise demands.

Commenting on the collaboration, Woon Ooi Yuen, Chief Technology Officer of U Mobile, said that U Mobile is pleased to appoint CT Sabah as its fibre leasing partner in Sabah and WP Labuan, highlighting that the partnership will accelerate U Mobile’s 5G rollout and enable the delivery of a superior 5G experience across Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Datuk Zurinah Hanafiah, Chief Executive Officer of CT Sabah, emphasised that the partnership reflects CT Sabah’s commitment to advancing digital connectivity in Sabah and WP Labuan. She noted that the 5G rollout is a key enabler for digital transformation, economic growth, and improved quality of life for communities in the region.

The collaboration was formalised through the signing of a Term Sheet agreement by key executives from both companies. This is expected to pave the way for a Definitive Agreement, targeted for finalisation by Q3 2025. Beyond infrastructure development, the partnership aims to support national digital aspirations by narrowing the digital divide and contributing towards Malaysia’s vision of becoming a high-income digital nation.

More updates will be shared as CT Sabah and U Mobile progress on this journey to transform digital connectivity in Sabah and WP Labuan.
